Who do I want the Lord to change?

If I understand the Lord properly, it seems that He is working all things together to bring about a transformation of my life and character:

And we know that God is working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose…to become conformed to the image of His Son.  Romans 8:28-29

So in all of life’s ups and downs and joys and sorrows, God is at work in the foreground and the background bringing supernatural change to me.  And that’s good news, though sometimes I wonder about it!  Some of God’s dealings are not joyful at the time but they yield great peace after we allow His life and character to be more fully formed in us.

So an important diagnostic question just now is: Who am I wanting God to change the most?  Is it me or someone else?  It is absolutely true that God is committed to doing a transforming work in the lives of all those who are in Christ. But at the end of the day I am not responsible for how others respond to God’s workings.  However, I am responsible for me.

God didn’t call us to make other people right.  Actually we can’t make anybody right.  Righteousness is a gift that God alone can impart.  No amount of human manipulation, sweat, anger, fear, or guilt can ever make anyone right.  God alone can make people right.  And He does this by bringing us into fellowship with the life of His Son.
