God enlarges His people through trials

“Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!  You have made room for me in my distress…” (Psalm 4:1)

Isn’t it our nature to simply want to escape trouble and distress?  When we think of deliverance, we usually think in terms of escaping trouble.  But the psalmist understood that deliverance is not the absence of trouble or of enemies!  Paul learned a similar lesson.  He asked three times for the thorn of opposition to be removed.  But God was enlarging the man through troubles!

Often God desires to do something greater than remove us from the troubles around us.  He desires to remove the trouble from within us!  He makes room for us in our distress by removing the distress from within our hearts and minds!  He does this by a law of displacement.  That is, He makes room within us by revealing Himself.  When He draws near His very presence and truth and love drive out darkness and fear!  What we really need…just now…is Him.  Period.  He is always more than enough.

The psalmist understood that his real need was not an absence of enemies or trouble.  His real need was God.  If God was on the scene, standing with him, then he could lie down and rest.  He could draw upon the Lord’s life and strength – even in the presence of his enemies (see Psalm 23:5).

Both fatalism and fanaticism are to be avoided.  Fatalism is when God’s children don’t expect anything from the Lord.  They just submit to every distress that comes along as God’s will.  Fanaticism is an opposite error.  It says that if you only have enough faith you will be delivered from every trouble.

But the psalmist understood that deliverance is more about the presence of God than the absence of trouble!

God can make room for you in every circumstance.  He may change the circumstance and He may not.  But He will absolutely be with you in the midst of the storm…if you cry out to Him and trust Him.  Wait for His presence.  Listen for His voice.  He is there, just now, using the circumstances you are facing to enlarge your capacity for trusting Him and experiencing Him.  Selah.
