Keys to Passionate Living (p.2)

Guard your hearts_Graduation message

You don’t have to agree.  But the truth is, we are all worshippers.  Even the agnostics and atheists among us.  Everybody has given their hearts to something…or someone.  That’s not in question.  What is in question is exactly what you are going to give your heart to!

The writer of Proverbs said,

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23)

There’s a principle in nature that’s also true of our hearts:  “Nature abhors a vacuum.”

This is an easily observable reality in our world.  From gravity to osmosis, from macro to micro levels, we see empty things seeking to be filled and greater things taking over lesser things.

Your heart is like this too.  It was made to be filled…and it cannot exist as a vacuum.

Another way of stating this is:  There’s a throne in your heart…with only room for one Master!

You were created to be passionately committed to a love relationship with God as He truly is. And this cannot happen until you see God revealing Himself in Christ Jesus!  Anything less than this or other than this is idolatry.

No human is truly free until they have no greater love and no more compelling vision and passion than truly knowing and following CHRIST!

Mark these words down!!!

The freedom you long for, and your heart is looking for, will never be lastingly found outside of a love relationship with God as He has very powerfully revealed Himself to the world through Jesus!

When Jesus is your supreme Passion, this will empower every lesser passion!  When sincere love for Christ rises like the ocean tide in your heart, your ability to freely and safely love other legitimate objects of affection will also rise!  Like the many boats in a harbor when the tide comes in!

Example:  Matt 22:37-38  Jesus replied,

“You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the foremost commandment. And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself…”

Only when love for God has taken its rightful throne in your heart can you freely and safely love all other legitimate objects most deeply! You will have more love to give your neighbor when you first love Jesus with all of your heart.

But if you have not found how to most deeply satisfy your heart in Jesus, nothing else will be able to safely and lastingly satisfy you.  You will be expecting them to do for you what only Jesus can do.  If Jesus hasn’t satisfied you, no friend or spouse will be able to either.  You will have made them an idol in your heart.  And though it might begin in great passion and fun, it never ends well.

Example:  Col 3:23  Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”

To lastingly and joyfully always have your heart in what you do in life, you must make sure that your SUPREME PASSION is to know, love, and follow the LORD!

Stated another way, your love for God in Christ is AN END IN ITSELF.  It is self-fulfilling.  It truly is all you essentially need.  No other loves or pursuits in your life can truly be an “end in itself.”  Other passions will end up using you (and others) up, feeding on you, and ultimately will leave you alone.

But heart passion for JESUS can spill over into every other legitimate pursuit in your life!

More next time.
